Feltre.

A city in northern Italy in the province of Belluno is sitting just under the Dolomites. I drove through several times when going to San Martino di Castrozza, a resort in the mountains, but never gave much of attention to it. Than one day I got an email. From a bride to be coming from South African republic and getting married in Feltre. So they have invited me to a South African wedding in Italy.

Villa San Liberale.
The couple met some friends from Italy and they fell in love with the city. The wedding and the reception was held in a beautiful villa just outside of Feltre – Villa San Liberale. The interiors of the villa were just amazing.

It was a small and intimate wedding with just the family and some closest friends. They set the ceremony in a nearby forest that mede everything look even more magical.

A relaxed party.

After we came back from the photoshoot in the old town of Feltre the storm suddenly changed plans. What was on the garden table needed to relocated inside the villa. It was taken care of in a matter of minutes as everyone picked a thing and helped out. Then the sky cleared for a relaxed outdoor party. And when I say relaxed, I really mean it. They were dancing, talking, playing football and above all no one was holding back. A perfect party.

As this is my home – Vipava valley – I am pleased every time I get a chance to shoot a wedding here. And if newlyweds also have a brilliant idea for their wedding I am all in. And this was the case with this forest wedding in Vipava valley. These two found a church in the middle of a forest just above the valley. We all had to drive this narrow and steep road, park at the end and walk for another 20 minutes uphill through the woods.

And there was a small church/chapel amongst the trees. After the ceremony the sun was almost setting so we need to hurry to get the bridal portraits before the dark. So we headed a bit higher to a clearing with some nice views over the valley. It was already dark in the woods. As I was walking backwards to get their shots on a narrow path I almost stepped on a snake. It was just minding her own business on the same path, though. Thank god I didn’t see it 🙂

We came to the clearing just in time. The sun was setting down and the colours on the mountains in the background were amazing. We have managed to get a lot of really great shots in a short time.

This is why I love Vipava valley.

The story behind this destination elopement in Soča valley is really interesting. Richard contacted me a few months before saying he and his fiancee My are looking to get some photos done somewhere in Slovenian mountain. By the way, I still don’t know how to correctly pronounce her name. I thought I was saying it right, but she was just smiling. They have visited Soča valley a year ago and they wanted their wedding photos to be taken in the amazing scenery of our mountains, preferably snowy Soča valley. I was up for the thing and promised to find a perfect location.

Well after that they got secretly married in Sweden, pack, grab the kids and took the train. Yeah, that’s right, the train and travelled all the way from Stockholm to Ljubljana.

We have met in Bovec, the weather was almost perfect. If it was October! But it was just three days till new year’s eve and there was no snow. By the way, there is still no snow today.

Nevertheless we have sat in our cars and drove all the way through Trenta until the source of Soča river. It took us a bit longer as the kids were not used of such winding roads in Sweden like this through Trenta is. In the end they were just fine and we followed the road just a little bit further and came to one of the most magical parts of the valley – Zadnja Trenta. No wonder one of the prettiest wedding venues in our country – Kekčeva domačija – lies here.

When we have arrived the sun was just setting behind the mountains and we immediately took advantage of that.

Destination elopement in Soča valley.

The first reason was of course the couple themselves. These two were almost too nice to be true. From my point of view, they trusted me completely and let me do my work the way I feel it is going to work.

They had this great vision when choosing other vendors. They both looked classy and elegant yet not too tight but relaxed. Her dress was from the magic hands of Croatian designers Envy Room and it couldn’t be a better match with the bride. The elegant make up and hair was done by the local make up and hair artist Tea Bratina.

The second reason was for sure the venue. Zemono mansion is one of the top wedding venues in Slovenia. It is located in the heart of Vipava valley on a small hill among the vineyards. What I like about Zemono is that no matter how big your wedding is, it always looks perfect. The mansion has a great restaurant – Gostilna pri Lojzetu – under the supervision of one of the world’s best chefs Tomaž Kavčič. So you know you can’t miss with the food choice here.

And the third reason was the timing. Yes, the timing or in other words being late. We have planned a portrait session on Nanos plateau at sunset. Nanos offers such beautiful sunsets over the valley. But in the end there were so many emotional speaches at the table that couldn’t be interrupted. So when we sat in the car, the sun was already setting down in the valley. And we had 30 minutes driving to the spot. They have asked me for opinion and I said: “Let’s do it anyway.”

So we have arrived to the location when the sun was gone and it was getting dark already. But that’s when the magic started.
